Function of the Crankshaft Pulley

1.Drive external engine accessories

It drives components such as the alternator, water pump, air conditioning compressor, and power steering pump via a drive belt, ensuring normal operation of the vehicle’s electrical system, cooling system, air conditioning, and power steering.

2.Transmit and regulate power

It transfers rotational power from the crankshaft to the accessory drive system, while controlling the rotational speed of each accessory through pulley diameter ratios.

3.Assist in damping vibration and reducing noise (damped pulleys)

Many crankshaft pulleys are integrated with an internal rubber damper to absorb torsional vibrations and shocks during crankshaft operation, preventing belt slippage, reducing engine shake, and protecting the crankshaft and timing system.

Maintenance Methods for the Crankshaft Pulley

1. Basic Visual Inspection (Recommended interval: every 5,000 km or every minor maintenance)

• Inspect pulley groove walls: Check the inner walls of the 3 grooves for wear-induced grooves, cracks, rust or deformation. Excessive groove wear will lead to poor fit between belts and grooves, causing slipping, abnormal noise and even power transmission interruption.
• Inspect fixing bolts: Verify that the pulley fixing bolts on the front end of the crankshaft are free of loosening, thread slipping or rusting. The bolt torque must comply with the vehicle model’s technical specifications. Loose bolts will cause eccentric operation of the pulley, accelerating the wear of belts and bearings.

Inspect end face and running condition: Visually check if the pulley end face is flat. Start the engine and observe if there is deflection or jitter during pulley operation. After turning off the engine, manually rotate the pulley to check for jamming or looseness, which may indicate internal bearing damage.

2. Synchronous Inspection of Drive Belts (Strongly correlated with pulley maintenance.

• Belt condition inspection: Check each of the three drive belts corresponding to the three grooves for cracks, aging-induced rubber peeling, delamination or edge fraying. Replace any belt that shows the above problems in a timely manner.

Belt tightness inspection: Press the middle part of the belt; the standard sinkage is 10–15 mm (slightly different for different vehicle models, subject to the maintenance manual). Excessively tight belts will increase the load on pulley bearings and accelerate wear; excessively loose belts are prone to slipping, affecting the normal operation of components such as the generator and water pump.

3. Linked Inspection of Auxiliary Components (Recommended interval: every 10,000 km)

• After starting the engine, listen for abnormal noises such as squeaking or metal friction in the transmission system during idle and acceleration. Abnormal noise may be caused by belt slipping, pulley bearing damage, or jamming of auxiliary components like the generator and water pump.
• Check the running resistance of the generator, power steering pump and water pump. Jamming of these components will pull the pulley reversely, causing additional load. Troubleshoot or replace faulty components in a timely manner.
